Finding A Voice

It’s a beautiful song, isn’t it? Esmerelda touches hearts and makes people cry with her desperate cry in her song. But how many people truly understand all that it stands for? God Help the Outcasts isn’t just relevant to Quasimodo and Esmerelda, I know how much it means to so many people today.
Growing up, I was never the “cool” kid. My family moved to Virginia the summer before my third grade year. I was a little chubby, socially awkward, and a complete nerd. Now I’m about to go into my junior year of high school and well… that hasn’t really changed. Just throw in a little more Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Doctor Who. When I first got to middle school, I found out real quickly that being a socially awkward, chubby dork was not exactly the road to popularity. Now I’ve never been one to strive to be “popular” or even admired. Attention was never on my list. But acceptance; that has always been something I have strived for. Not even acceptance so much as a chance to speak out. I knew I had some great things to say, but I couldn't find a voice loud enough to say it with. Some would have called me an outcast.
There were times when I thought there was no chance left for me to mean anything to the world. I do realize how melodramatic that seems. But middle school is one heck of a wake up call, more so than most believe. All of a sudden you’re thrown from childhood into a world where there are cliques, bullies, tougher classes, and so much responsibility. Sometimes it got a smidge overwhelming. Sometimes it seems like the world is against you, or even worse; that everyone is going through the same thing but no one has the guts to say it.  That was my problem. I had so much to say, but I felt that I had no one to say it to. That is what Esmerelda’s song leads me to think about. You never know who out there needs to say something important, something that will make you think. So many people are overlooked, but there are some, like Esmerelda, that do notice. And they are the ones who I would like to thank. I did end up finding my place. But I’m still working on finding myself and finding my own voice. So I challenge you to not overlook anyone. Help the outcasts, don’t ignore them. Like Quasimodo, you never know who has something important to say, they may just have to work a little harder to find their voice.

Fly again soon <3

  1. You are a girl who recognizes the voice in others ...and who knows the value of a word well spoken. It's a talent and part of what makes you beautiful!
